Simple and effective, this electrostatic plume consists of colored nylon string protruding from a central disc. The central disc is attached to a support rod and plastic base. If brought into contact with a strong electrostatic field from a Van De Graaff generator or Wimshurst machine, the nylon strings will stand up on end. A variety of electrostatic demonstrations are possible with this device.

Pretty Plume
It's very pretty even if it shows little to talk about. But if you buy two of them so that some of the strings point at each other, you can talk about the fact that those that point away is because infinity acts like a distant ground. That is in contrast to magnetic field lines which must have both ends of a field line attached to something ferrous.
